1.) MAGGIE LAUBSER by Johannes Meintjes
Publisher's cream cloth binding with green titles on front panel and spine.
47pp. with 30 reproductions of Laubser's work in text, 3 of which are colour plates.
Size: 33 x 25cm
After an exhibition of Laubser's work in 1940, a then seventeen year old Johannes Meintjes wrote a letter of admiration to the artist. A strong friendship developed with the result that Meintjes wrote this monography on the artist when he was only twenty one years old. This was the very first book written by Meintjes, who was to become a most prolific author of biographies, plays and novels. Apart from his writing Meintjes was also one of South Africa's most distinguished and renowned artists, who, barely in his twenties, was already exhibiting together with the likes of Gérard Sekoto, Jean Welz, Maud Sumner, Walter Battiss, Cecil Higgs, Gregoire Boonzaier, and of course his great inspiration, Maggie Laubser.
Book is clean and binding is solid. Some age-associated wear along the corners and spine ends. A good copy.
