This is a prominent historical book written by the British journalist, intelligence officer, and adventurer Captain Charles L. Norris-Newman. First published in 1895 by T. Fisher Unwin, London, the work provides a detailed, first-hand colonial account of the British South Africa Company's military campaigns and the eventual conquest of Matabeleland in the mid-1890s. The book chronicles the First Matabele War (1893), outlining the events leading up to the downfall and death of King Lobengula. It covers the strategic concessions made by the Chartered Company and includes a controversial defence against alleged atrocities committed during the war. Featuring detailed descriptions of notable conflicts, such as the pursuit of the King and the famous disaster that befell Major Allan Wilson and his men (the Shangani Patrol). There are sketch maps, detailed battle plans and lists of the first colonial officials who occupied the territory.
