According to the preface (written in the third person with reference to the author as “he”) this account of the New Zealand Contingents in South Africa is largely due to the writings of others in private letters and the public press. The final chapter is an account of the vain attempt of the Maoris to be allowed to join the white contingents sent to South Africa.
