Mendelssohn (Sidney) South African Bibliography, volume 2 page 587: 'The work consists of four parts, which include:

  1. Laying the Boundary-line from the Orange to Vaal Rivers.
  2. From the Diamond Fields to Delagoa Bay.
  3. From Cape Town to Kimberley.
  4. The Land Settlement of Griqualand West.

The diary kept during the author's first stay in Griqualand West is full of valuable information respecting the Country, the Boers, the natives, and the diggers ...On the journey from Cape Town to Kimberley the author met with Cecil Rhodes, ... it is stated that even in these early days Rhodes appears to have had very definite ideas on certain subjects, and had formed his own opinion that "one cannot get at the real views of the Boers by speaking to them"'
