44 silver gelatin prints taken in the late 19th century and early 20th centuries, each 200 x 150 mm, mounted one to a page in an old album which has been neatly rebound in red simulated leather with gilt titling on the upper cover and spine. The album measures: 220 x 290 mm.

Most of the photographs are identified with a hand written caption, loosely inserted, supplied by the well-known local historian Margaret Parkes.

The photographer, James Ernest Jones, advertised his new photographic studio in the George & Knysna Herald on Wednesday, September 26, 1894:

‘Mr E. Jones from Cape Town, wishes to intimate to the public of Knysna and the District that he has fitted up a commodious Studio next door to the "Herald" Office, Knysna. Ladies and gentlemen honouring E. J. with sittings, may depend upon obtaining first-class Photographs. Views of the Town and surrounding scenery, Groups of School Children, etc., etc., may also be obtained at the Studio.’

Jones was born in Antwerp, Belgium, of British parents in 1848. His period of activity coincided with Knysna's expansion after the timber boom and the nearby Millwood gold-rush era, when a number of itinerant and resident photographers were working in the southern Cape.
