Pilgrim's Rest was a boom town established in the early 1870's during the Transvaal Gold Rush after large amounts of alluvial gold was discovered in a local stream. The dream of great wealth reached fever pitch and within a short period the isolated valley had an estimated 1500 prospectors working on 4000 claims. In the 1880's the alluvial gold dwindled and prospectors moved on to Barberton. The town today hasn't changed much since the romantic days of the gold rush and thanks in part to its value as a tourist attraction has been declared a provincial heritage site.
