DESCRIPTION:
An outstanding paired lot featuring two of the most significant modern South African facsimile productions replicating Harris’s monumental 1840 masterwork. This lot offers a rare chance to compare the scale, color reproduction, and layout styles executed by two premier regional publishers in the mid-1980s.
1. THE GALAGO EDITION (1986): Quarto (approx. 330 x 255mm). 144pp. Gray cloth hardcovers with gilt lettering. Complete with full text, 20 colour plates (reduced size), and 10 full-sized monochrome plates along with 30 vignettes. Complete with original pictorial dust jacket.
2. THE SABLE PUBLISHERS EDITION (1986): Massive Folio (approx. 430 x 330mm). 175pp. Large oversized heavy format. Bound in fine cloth with ornate gilt decoration to the front board. Retains the impressive large-scale facsimile lithographic colour plates by Frank Howard. Complete with original pictorial dust jacket.
Both volumes have been meticulously cared for and are now individually housed in brand new protective archival plastic sleeves.
BINDING CONDITION: Very Good Plus. Both books feature clean, sharp cloth boards, strong corners, and structurally pristine, tight bindings.
JACKET CONDITION: Very Good Plus. Both original dust jackets are bright, clean, and entirely free of major chips or tears, now beautifully preserved under clear plastic sleeves.
INTERNAL CONDITION: Very Good Plus. Clean, bright, and crisp internal leaves throughout both copies. Free of foxing, thumb marks, or owner inscriptions. An exceptional presentation set for the wildlife art collector.
