"This publication reviews the railway development within the sub continent from the beginnings, in 1860, over the following one hundred and fifty years. Comprehensive technical detail regarding the motive power, which had been placed into service with the state managed railway organisations, is outlined through the various chapters. The major private railway operations in the region are also featured.
Also included the motive power from the neighbouring countries Swaziland, Lesotho, Namibia and Botswana.
This 416 page book contains 848 black and white archive and 884 colour photographs, many of which have never been published before. In addition, there are 391 technical drawings or diagrams, 23 major technical specifications tables and 11 regional railway maps. For the entire time span to 2011, the author has spared no effort in order to depict the subject matter from a wide and varied perspective."
