On offer is an ORIGINAL (?gelatin silver) Press photograph of the the most iconic photograph of the Second World War taken by Joe Rosenthal on February 23rd, 1945: RAISING THE FLAG ON IWO JIMA. The size of the image is 15 x 10.5cms. with no border. Tipped on to the rear of the photograph is the original typed/?mimeographed Press information slip dated 3/6/1945 - apparently the 6th March, about a week after the image was shot. This slip describes in fair detail the circumstances of the flag raising. It also states ' SERVICED BY NEW YORK TO LIST A. WAR POOL PHOTO, NOT FOR USE IN BRITISH ISLES, FRANCE OR WESTERN HEMISPHERE. APPROVED BY APPROPRIATE U.S. AUTHORITY. A remarkable original survival. Larger images signed by the photographer have fetched over $100,000 on auction. It won the 1945 Pulitzer Prize for Photography and has come to be regarded in the United States as one of the most recognizable images of World War II.
The photograph, which has mild bowing, is in very good plus/near fine condition - untorn and without defect. The attached slip has several creases.
PLEASE NOTE: I am not a collectable photograph expert. This image was bought by myself on auction as part of a large archive of Second World War Press photographs some 35-40 years ago! It seems to have all the necessary attributes of a Type 1 photograph. I have no idea as to how many contemporary press photos of this image might exist and similarly have no accurate idea of its value - which might be well above the reserve price being asked.
- Overall Condition: Very Good Plus
