A collection of 134 short portrait biographies of University of Cape Town students who laid down their lives in the Second World War.
'It was my privilege as Vice-Chancellor and Principal to serve the University during the momentous years of the Second World War. They were years of difficulty and of anxiety but they were also years of stimulation to a greater effort in a great cause.
We cannot praise too highly the noble self-sacrifice of those who, often in very difficult circumstances, responded to the call for service to their country in time of its greatest need. We look back with pride on what thousands of present and former members of the University - both men and women - have done. Unhappily, many laid down their lives. This brochure is issued in their memory. Those listed include a few about whom the latest information available is "reported missing." - A. W. Falconer
