'With friends amongst the Premiers and the gardeners and the grooms, with playground that included Kirstenbosch and the Zoo and the Rhodes Memorial, the author spent her youth in Rondebosch at the Cape, in the incomparable setting of the Groote Schuur Estate. Her father was Manager for twenty years. The Estate was left to the nation by Cecil John Rhodes, and Groote Schuur House has been the official Cape Town residence of successive Prime Ministers ever since.
The busy life of the Estate and of her own lively family is humorously described through the perceptive eyes of the author as a young girl; also the excursions away, to farms in the Koeberg, and holidays at old Blaauwberg and Hout Bay.
Woven into all is a picture of the village of Rondebosch and of how life was led in the Twenties, when the Magic Lantern was an event of a winter's evening, butter was churned on the back stoep, and Rudolph Valentino in The Sheik drew full houses at the Premier Bioscope on the main Road.' - editor's note
