By this slim margin the South African parliament approved a resolution to go to war on 4 September 1939. Steyn makes his case interestingly and impressively that the War altered the course of South Africa and gave huge impetus to the battle of nationalisms, Afrikaner and African, that were to shape the remainder of the century.
