"Dr. Andrew Smith is known to most South Africans for his scientific and anthropological studies made during various journeys in the Cape and Natal, as well as to the Transvaal; overseas, he is remembered as the Director-General of the British Medical Services during the Crimean War. ... He spent fifteen years in South Africa, where he found much scope for his talents as a naturalist. As a result of his investigations and publications on the subject, he has been acknowledged as the father of South African Zoology. His military duties had, practically from his arrival, taken him into areas inhabited by the aborigines, and this aroused his interest in both anthropology and exploration. He accordingly made copious notes on the manners and customs of the Bantu tribes with whom he came in contact."
