This oblong sized souvenir booklet is in good condition, has 12 pictures, the edges of the carton covers have wear. Bound by a string at the spine. Undated.
Percy Missen Clark (b.1875) arrived from Cambridge, England in Rhodesia during the Boer War where he met Rhodes during his stay in Bulawayo. During this stay in Bulawayo he shared lodgings with another well-known publisher of Rhodesian postcards - Ellis Allen. Clark established the first curio, or souvenir, shop, Clark’s Curios, in 1903 at Victoria Falls. He was also a photographer with many postcards bearing his images.
By 1910 the enterprising Percy Clark had been running a fleet of nine Canadian canoes on the river for some years. Guests could be paddled across to Cataract Island from the southern bank, and to Livingstone Island from the northern shore. In March 1911 Clark announced the arrival of his new motorized launch, called Inyandiza, which operated Sunday afternoon cruises from the old boathouse. All reservations were to be made by the Victoria Falls Hotel, to which Clark paid a percentage.
Clark’s son, Victor, himself a skilled photographer, took over the family business and continued operations for many years.This edition of the Souvenir is probably issued around 1950.
