'The need for an authoritative book on the lives and work of the Daniells has long been felt. These three remarkable relatives - Thomas and William, both R.A.'s, and Samuel, a strange personality as well as an accomplished artist - had a profound influence on the artistic life of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. The works which they published in book form - volumes of superb coloured aquatints - continue to make increased prices in sales by auction. Yet little has been known until now about their individual lives, which were by no means unromantic.

Here for the first time are described the journeyings of these famous travellers, which gave them the material for The Picturesque Voyage to India by the Way of China, Sketches in Southern Africa, Picturesque Illustrations of the Island of Ceylon, and the superb Voyage Round Great Britain. New light is thrown on their methods of work, and the Daniells emerge as most interesting characters.

The author has spent nearly thirty years in compiling this work, with assistance from many sources. It is very fully illustrated, and the appendices provide a complete iconography and bibliography which will be invaluable to collectors. Here at last is the standard work on the Daniells.' - editor's note
