THE LIFE OF GEORGE WASHINGTON
Commander in Chief of the American Forces during the war which established the Independence of his country and first President of the United States

The Life of George Washington by John Marshall is a historical biography of the first U.S. President, written by his friend and contemporary, John Marshall. First published in five volumes between 1804 and 1807, it was the first-ever presidential biography.

John Marshall was a respected American statesman and jurist. He served as the fourth - and longest-serving - Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court from 1801 until his death in 1835.

Marshall served alongside Washington in the Continental Army and received access to Washington's papers for the writing of the biography. In addition to his time in the military and on the Supreme Court, he also served as a U.S. Representative and Secretary of State under President John Adams.

Marshall based the biography on personal papers bequeathed to Washington's nephew, Bushrod Washington, who was also a friend of Marshall.  First published during the presidency of Thomas Jefferson, a political rival, Marshall's account was criticized by some as partisan. However, historians have since praised the work for its accuracy and well-reasoned judgments.

The biography was originally released as a five-volume series.
