A signed inscription on ffep to WAR Collins, dated 12/3/1952, Hilton Road, Natal. Inscribed by Ethel Campbell, the daugter of Sam Campbell. Also an extra typed note by her loosely inserted.

Collins joined the East Lancashire Regiment in 1892 and was promoted through the ranks, eventually becoming a captain in 1900. During the Anglo-Boer War, he served as a war correspondent for the (British) Daily News. In 1906, he was involved in the Natal Native Rebellion, where he was Commandant of the Natal Militia.
Collins collected stone tools from various sites during his military service, including locations in Natal, indicating his interest in archaeology and prehistory. He was a founding member of the South African Geological Association in the Transvaal in 1888.
