‘Largely written by G.W. Stow before his death in 1882. The unfinished manuscript was purchased by the linguist Lucy Lloyd at an unknown date. Lloyd had intended to publish the work, but became preoccupied by other duties. In 1904, she presented it to G.M. Theal, who set to work on preparing it for publication. This involved cutting unnecessary material, organising the remainder of the book into digestible chapters, and introducing a preface. Theal had completed his editing by 1905.’ May (http://emandulo.apc.uct.ac.za/metadata/FHYA%20Depot/1188/4819/index.html)
