An official manual documenting the tribes of the Transvaal, providing officers with a clearer understanding of the region. It Includes detailed summaries and census records from 1904 to document the indigenous cultures, providing detailed information about the local populations living in the region at the start of the twentieth century. The offered copy unfortunately lacks the map printed housed in the pocket at the back of the book.
The first chapter charts the history of the tribes up to 1905. This is followed by an historical overview of each tribe in each division of the Transvaal. These chart their family lineage, listing the tribal leaders and noting each population of general persons and fighting men.
The book proceeds to document a series of wars and punitive expeditions against the tribes conducted by the Boer government. This is followed by information about the customs of the Bantu tribe and an appendix of tables listing missions and the locations of tribal strongholds.
