155 pages, profusely illustrated in colour and black & white, brown paper-covered boards, titled gilt on the spine, a very good copy in the dust jacket, now housed in a Brodart protector.

Second edition after the original exhibition catalogue and the first in hardback.

The Neglected Tradition was a ground breaking exhibition held at the Johannesburg Art Gallery in late 1988 and early 1989. For the first time in South Africa, the work of nearly 100 black South African artists was presented in an exhibition hosted by an art museum. Hailed as a turning point in South African art history, this catalogue critically exposes and considers the art of black South African operating in a Western fine art tradition. The catalogue contains an historical overview by Steven Sack, biographies of each artist included in the exhibition compiled by Lesley Spiro, and an extensive bibliography itemising publications, newspaper articles and relevant research material compiled by Brendan Bell.

Editor’s notes:This second printing has limited revisions, namely the correction of factual and certain typographical errors, and the inclusion of death dates of artists who have died since 1988.
