Mendelssohn (Sidney)South African Bibliography vol. 1 page 371: The first part, including the staff diary from November 17th, 1899, to February 12th, 1900, was written by Major-General Sir H.E. Colvile. 'General Colvile landed at Cape Town on November 15, 1899, and left the same night for Lord Methuen's headquarters, being present at the battle of Belmont, but not at Magersfontein. He was appointed to the command of the newly organised Ninth Division on February 10, 1900, and remained in charge of it until it was disbanded. The force took part in the battles of Paardeberg, Poplar Grove, and Sanna's Post, and in the forward march of Lord Roberts through the Free State and the Transvaal.'
