344 pages, frontispiece portrait, 4 plates, folding map, original red pebble grained cloth titled gilt on the upper cover and spine.

Ex reference library copy with one stamp on introductory page, no cards. Title page has left corner missing. Gilt on spine faded, boards bumped and discolouration mark on covers. Some browning to end papers. Bookplate of previous owner on FEP. Clean internally. A fair to good copy.

The first part of the book was written by Major-General Sir H.E. Colvile, which includes the staff diary from November 17th, 1899, to February 12th, 1900.

'General Colvile landed at Cape Town on November 15, 1899, and left the same night for Lord Methuen's headquarters, being present at the battle of Belmont, but not at Magersfontein. He was appointed to the command of the newly organised Ninth Division on February 10, 1900, and remained in charge of it until it was disbanded. The force took part in the battles of Paardeberg, Poplar Grove, and Sanna's Post, and in the forward march of Lord Roberts through the Free State and the Transvaal.'
