Large hardback with grey linen boards and gilt blocking to front board, and gilt lettering to spine. Plates from original paintings by Norman C.K. Lighton.
Dr Allan Bird is to be congratulated in bringing to the attention of many of us the great merit of Norman Lighton as a gifted bird artist, it is long overdue. The much reduced plates in Roberts' book give no idea of the excellence of Lighton's craftsmanship and artistic worth. For the first time this new work shows the true value of his original plates.
When the idea of Austin Roberts editing a Book on South African Birds was first suggested to him by Dr.R.Bigalke and myself in 1935, the real problem which the three of us appreciated was to find an illustrator for the work which Roberts assured us he could produce. At that time bird artists in South Africa were few in number, and it was indeed fortunate that Norman Lighton was well known to Roberts and he has already had the opportunity of knowing his job.
