Mendelssohn (Sydney) South African Bibliography, volume 2, page 265. ‘The author was in Johannesburg at the time of the Jameson Raid, and remarks, " When we in Johannesburg, at the command of Sir Hercules Robinson," surrendered our arms, “we did so, fully believing in the promises made by him in the Queen's Name, through the British Resident, that . . . Jameson's life would be spared and the British Government would take up our cause, and see all just demands should be conceded to us, and that every person in Johannesburg would be protected from any punishment for what had been done. Now I distinctly say, with all the emphasis I can, that it was only upon these conditions that Johannesburg surrendered. I was present through it all, and heard both Sir Jacobus de Wet's and Sir Sidney Shippard's speeches."’
