xiv, 505 pages: illustrations, frontispiece, portraits, plans, maps (mostly folding). Cloth, dust wrapper.

Deals with the "Crusader" offensive, the first operation of the Eighth Army, in which the 1st South African Division and the South African Air Force had their earliest experience of warfare in the Western Desert. This was the second of three authoritative volumes on the South African war effort produced by Union War Histories, before the section was closed down by the National Party government. The maps included in this volume are often reproduced in other histories of this stage of the Desert War. They are very detailed and reflect forces on both sides.
