From 1892 until 1929 a railway line of just over 5 kilometers ran from the Cape Town station along the edge of the foreshore and onward to Sea Point. It struggled financially to compete, initially with trams, then buses and finally cars. Its legacy is the splendid grassed and paved Sea Point promenade which took its place that Cape Town residents and visitors use in it their thousands every day.
