'This is not a new edition of Thomas Bowler of the Cape of Good Hope (E.&.F.Bradlow, 1955). It is a new book written with a different approach. When my wife and I wrote the previous book our emphasis was on the man and his life. In this book the emphasis is on his work. For that reason the descriptions of the pictures in the list of original work embody, as far as possible, historical and other information on a much more extensive scale than in the previous book; the method of producing and publishing the prints has been emphasised; and various sections have been added, including: a note on The Student's Handbook of Art; the list of Bowler pictures sold on the sale of the late Sir A.Bailey in 1951, with the prices fetched; an examination of the papers in the file of Bowler's deceased estate'.
