156 pages, [7] leaves of plates: colour illustrations (1 as frontispiece) with tissue guards. Embossed cloth. Spotting to page edges & preliminary pages. Inscription dated 1858 on front endpaper.

This volume followed on from the 1852 publication of Bishop Gray's first visits to the Cape. The Bishop was thus able to elucidate on progress that had been made and churches that had been constructed. The seven Baxter process plates (printed in oils on an aquatint base) by Sophie Gray are in exceptional condition. The churches at Knysna and Swellendam, and scenes of Plettenberg Bay and George depict the Cape as a Garden of Eden. See Mendelssohn, vol. 1, p. 628. A tightly bound, clean copy.
