Versatile Genius: The Royal Engineers and Their Maps is a rare cartographic catalogue compiled by Yvonne Garson and published in 1992 by the University of the Witwatersrand Library in Johannesburg. Released as No. 3 in the library's Africana Series, this highly collectible work details the highly accurate and artistic survey maps created by British military engineers during the 19th century.
It features comprehensive commentaries and detailed reproductions of a special collection of 38 manuscript maps which were originally collected and donated to the university by the notable South African medical practitioner and historical author, Dr Percy Ward Laidler. The Manuscript maps and plans in this collection were drawn in the Eastern Cape, between 1822 and 1870, by the Royal Engineers of the British Army. The emphasis is on military installations in the area.
