Portuguese text. No limitation number. Reproduces 139 watercolours and drawings. Facsimile reprint of the 1816 watercolours and drawings by Debret (1768-1848). The images cover nature, people, towns, slavery etc. Jean-Baptiste Debret (1768-1848), a painter and draftsman born in Paris, was part of the French Artistic Mission, arriving in Brazil in 1816 alongside the architect Grandjean de Montigny. The mission was requested by Dom João VI and planned by António Araújo e Azevedo, the Count of Barca. The mission's objective was, among other things, to organize the creation of the Academy of Fine Arts. During his time in Brazil, from 1816 to 1831, Debret, with his neoclassical traits, portrayed Brazil at the time in unique historical detail. From the Portuguese court in the country to the court established by the proclaimer of independence, Dom Pedro I, nothing went unnoticed in Debret's work. When he returned to France, he published, between 1834 and 1839 his “Voyage Pittoresque et Historique au Brésil” (Picturesque and Historical Journey to Brazil), which documented aspects of Brazilian man, nature and society.
