Navy blue full leather binding, four raised bands with red morocco labels on spine, tooled gilt titles and borders. Marbled top edge. This is presumably either a set in the publisher's presentation binding, or a very well executed binding for a private library.

A facsimile reprint of the 1835 edition, limited to 750 numbered copies (this being number 334), published by C. Struik in 1966.

'An account of travels in South Africa undertaken in the course of a residence in the Cape extending over a period of ten years. During his expeditions, Mr. Steedman traversed a great part of the Cape Colony and Kaffraria, penetrating the country up to Griqualand West. He was an industrious and able collector and naturalist, and the volumes contain much valuable information respecting the fauna of the country. His name was given to a species of meerkat (Cynictis Steedmanii), which is mentioned under this title by Mr. Wo. Ogilby (Proceedings of the Zoological Society for 1833), and also in the index of the "Report of the Expedition for Exploring Central Africa". The work gives many details respecting early travels in South Africa, with sketches of native races and their history and wars, the pioneer colonists of Natal, &c. The Appendices, which extend to 213 pages, include a letter and journal by Mr. A.G. Bain, who accompanied Dr. (afterwards Sir A.) Smith's expedition into the interior as far as Philippolis, and gives an account of the journey, an interesting narrative of the wreck of the Grosvenor, and much valuable matter respecting the Kat River and other settlements in Kaffraria, and the Kaffir outbreaks and wars up to this period.' - Mendelssohn Vol.II, page 431-2

"Steedman spent ten years in South Africa, with a fair amount of time hunting big game. He hunted elephant north of Cape Town, then crossed the Orange River where quagga and wildebeest were encountered, with additional sport after lion. Most of this work, however, details the terrain and native peoples of the region." - Czech, An Annotated Bibliography of African Big Game Hunting Books 1785-1999
