It is a fictionalized hunting safari and exploratory expedition into the heart of Zululand and the surrounding borders of Natal and Mozambique, based on his elder brother Joshua's experiences as a border agent on the Zulu frontier. First published in 1869 and reissued in 1879 at a moment of intense British public interest in Zululand. The war, marked by the British disaster at Isandlwana (22 January 1879) and the heroic defence of Rorke's Drift, made any account of Zulu life immediately topical.
Hugh Mulleneux ( 1822-1882) had an exotic career. He joined the Army, including time with the 25th Bengal Native Infantry, and then volunteered to join the Bashi Bazouks, an unsavoury formation of irregulars in the service of the Ottoman Empire. In due course he rose to the Ottoman rank of colonel. On his eventual return to England in about the mid 1850's he wrote a succession of books, including several describing his own extensive travels on military service, a biography of his late father Sir Joshua Walmsley and also some adventure novels.
