The earliest literary publication from Port Elizabeth!
'The account of the Kaffir War is in the form of a long poem consisting of 202 pages, and of the minor pieces, Fragment I. is entitled "Bachelor's Life on a Sheep Farm"; Fragment II. "On Choosing a Wife. A Sequel to Bachelor's Life"; Fragment III. "A Batchelor's Soliloquy, or A Dream of Married Life." There are a number of notes to "A Feature in South African Frontier Life," which give considerable information regarding the Eastern Province and Kaffraria.
Although the title-page states that this is Vol. I., it is very doubtful whether any subsequent volume was published.' - Mendelssohn Vol.I, page 744
SABIB does not record a Volume II.
'A curiosity, written in verse; and a rare specimen of early Port Elizabeth printing.' - A Catalogue of Valuable Africana of the late Sir Abe Bailey, 1951, page 46
Anna Smith (Spread of printing, p. 84) notes that two books printed in 1852 "seem to be the earliest books printed in Port Elizabeth."
