'A reviewer of my former book expressed the hope that the author would some day give an account of his journeys and observations during the campaign in East Africa. This book has been written with that object. It is not in any way a war book, but inasmuch as it would not have been written except for the war, which took the author into many interesting parts of Africa that would otherwise never have been visited, it may be said to be a by-product.' - preface
