First editions in English: 2 volumes, color woodblock illustrations throughout, publisher's color pictorial wrappers, bound side-stitched in the Japanese style, printed on double leaves, moderate overall wear, many edges creased, pages with some toning throughout; No. 2 (The Birds' Party) is rather extensively dampstained, but still legible, good-.

The first two (of three) illustrated fairy tales of the Aino (i.e. Ainu) people, as told by Basil Hall Chamberlain (1850-1935), a notable British scholar of Japanese culture who lived in Japan between 1873-1911 under the status of a O-yatoi Gaikokujin. The Aino series did not catch on and was discontinued after the third issue.
