475 + 568 + 580pp. Full-leather hardcover bindings, gilt lettering and tooling to spines, gilt tooling to boards, top edges stained brown, other edges speckled. Marbled endpapers. Condition: Good-very good. Light rubbing and wear to the boards and the spines. Previous owner’s bookplates to front pastedowns, and also to rear pastedown of vol 1. Light creases to bottom corners of last few pages of vol 2. Overall slight foxing throughout. Text still clean and clear. All three volumes are still well bound.

 

William Bingley (1774 – 1823) was an English cleric, naturalist and writer. Bingley was a prolific writer, and several of his works were popular. One of the most popular of Bingley's compilation was ‘Animal Biography’ (1803), on natural history. The sixth edition appeared in 1824, and the work was translated into several European languages. A related volume Memoirs of British Quadrupeds, appeared in 1809. His ‘Practical Introduction to Botany’ was published in 1817, and republished after the author's death in 1827.
