Rhodesia was still a young country in the 1950's.  Some of the pioneers who had personally experienced and taken part in the opening up of Rhodesia were still alive.  There were many tales of those early days in circulation at the time; tales that rested partly on fiction and partly on fact.

With the passing of each pioneer the chance of ascertaining the truth or amplifying the tales becomes more remote or falls away.  For this reason the author sought personal contact with these "Old Timers" on his travels throughout Rhodesia and presided them to talk about their own experience.  The 15 chapters of the book relates the experiences as told to him.
