'Arriving in South Africa in 1850, Lucas joined the Cape Mounted Rifles and took part in the Eighth Frontier War of 1850-53. He next accompanied Sir George Clerk as commander of a mounted escort to Bloemfontein, to arrange for the withdrawal of the British from the Orange River Sovereignty. He describes the capital of the later Orange Free State 'As desolate a place as it is possible to imagine'. He describes many hunting trips and the hardships suffered by game during periods of continuous drought.' Dictionary of South African Biography, Volume III, pages 544/5
