The CAPE ALMANACS began in 1801 with the handwritten AFRICAN COURT CALENDAR. This was followed by the AFRICAN ALMANAC of 1802, printed by Harry Harwood Smith. There is no known volume for 1803. In 1804 ALMANAK VOOR DE KAAP DE GOEDE HOOP was published. In 1805 and 1806 the title became LYST VAN ALLE COLLEGIAN. With the second British occupation in 1807, the name reverted to AFRICAN COURT CALENDAR, which it remained up to 1827.

The early almanacs contained lists of colonial officials and military personnel, as well as astronomical data, local regulations and shipping movements. From 1809 a directory of merchants was included, and from 1810 a general directory of Cape Town. A valuable reference tool.
