True first edition of the first book dedicated entirely to the subject of South African Cycads. It has been reprinted numerous times and the original first edition is now very uncommon.

122pp with numerous photographs in colour.

Binding solid. Corners sharp. Taking age into consideration the jacket is in excellent condition with slight fading on the spine and minimal age-associated rubbing along the edges.

'Cycads are the most primitive living seedbearing plants known and belong to an ancient order, the Cycadales, which flourished in the Carboniferous period 50 to 60 million years ago. The cycads we know today have changed little in their basic character.

This book contains a description of the stem, leaves, seeds and cones of each of the twenty-nine South African species with a colour plate showing details of male cones, female cones, leaf details and plants in their natural habitats. These are supplemented by pencil and pen and ink drawings by Barbara Jeppe.

There are sections on the propagation of cycads, hybrids, damaged plants and their regrowth, pests and diseases and on special laws for the protection of cycads.' - editor's note
