How it works

  • Quarto
  • Colour-illustrated laminated unclipped dustjacket, green cloth-boards, gilt to spine, illustrated endpapers, 112 pp of text printed on heavy art-paper and illustrated in colour and b/w

The dustjacket is very slightly edge-chipped but the copy is in better than very good condition overall - square and tightly bound, complete, unmarked and undiscoloured

From the dustjacket:

"Cycads are the most primitive living seedbearing plants known and belong to an ancient order, the Cycadeles, which flourished in the Carboniferous period 50 to 60 million years ago. The cycads we know today have changed little in their basic character

"This book, now in its second revised and augmented edition, is the result of years of study and of trips to see and photograph cycads in their natural habitats. Each of the 29 South African species is described in terms of stem, leaves, seeds and cones. Each description is accompanied by a colour plate showing details of male cones, female cones, leaves and plants in their natural environment. These are supplemented by superb pencil and pen and ink drawings by Barbara Jeppe

"There are sections on the propagation of cycads, hybrids, damaged plants and their regrowth, pests and diseases and on special laws to protect cycads"
