DIAMOND BOZAS - LIFE AND WORK (SIGNED)

Scarce publication. This book was produced in tandem with the Tatham Art Gallery's major  retrospective of his work to celebrate Diamond Bozas's 90th birthday in 2013. The author Brendan Bell was also director at the Tatham Art Gallery, and he describes Diamond Bozas as a remarkable man, as “no other artist has portrayed Zululand’s indigenous vegetation, its historic sites and its cane farming operations as he has,”, and that this helped people to see Zululand and traditional Zulu artefacts in a different way.Bell confirmed that: “Diamond’s work is a record of our past – it’s part of our cultural heritage.”

Diamond Bozas was born at Isipingo. He studied at the Chelsea School of Art, London. He was a founder member and Chairperson of the Zululand Society of Arts. During the 1980s, Bozas was largely responsible for the establishment of the TEACH Museum in Empangeni and he served on the Advisory Board of that museum. He was a primer mover in the building of the new VM in 2001 in Eshowe. 

His mesmerising still lifes grounded in realism, his atmospheric and symbolic KwaZulu-Natal landscapes, particularly fields of sugarcane, and his forays into decorative abstraction, have made him a favourite of institutions and discerning collectors, both in South Africa and abroad.
