In this work the authenticity of Piet Retief's treaty with Zulu King Dingaan is questioned by Sir George Cory as the original "went missing" sometime around 1900. Gustav Preller refutes this by providing ample evidence via the original copies that were made on the spot when it was first discovered on Retief's remains 10 months after he and his party were murdered. Preller saw the blood-stained treaty with his own eyes in the State Archives in 1893 but after it was sent to Holland in the early 1900's for an exhibition, under the care of former State Secretary W.J. Leyds, the treaty went missing.
