Margaret Whiting Spilhaus (1889-1981), author of books on numerous subjects ranging from geography, genealogy, botany to children's literature, but mainly South African history. Apart from writing she was also a book illustrator and cartographer known for a series of 5 large-format pictorial maps published between 1927 - 1943. 

Former owner's name (Helen Robinson) on front endpaper. Robinson's review of this book is on the verso of the front endpaper. Handwritten letter by Margaret Spilhaus (dated 7/3/'70) on half-title page thanking Robinson for her kind review of the book.

Spilhaus's personal copy of Commando, inscribed to her by Deneys Reitz, is also on the current auction (see lot 18).
