  • "If missionary leader leader John Philip had succeeded in his campaign for racial equality and justice, South African history would have been very different"

An as-new unmarked copy, colour-illustrated and typographical dustjacket, green cloth-boards, plain endpapers and 413 pp of prelims, text illustrated with photographs and maps, and index

Dr John Philip was the Superintendent of the London Missionary Society in South Africa, overseeing dozens of mission stations and at the same time championing the cause of South African racial equality to MPs in London - for which he gained more opprobrium than thanks

Named after him, Philippolis - which will have its two hundredth anniversary next year - was perhaps the most successful of the mission stations, becoming the oldest settlement (excepting today's Maputo) in Southern Africa north of the Orange (then Gariep) River

Today the town has its ups and downs economically - mainly because it is no longer on the main road between the Witwatersrand in the north and Cape Town in the south

  • Because of its historic connections, however, we - Fontein Books, a seller on AntiquarianAuctions since its inception -  have operated our bookshop and gallery in Philippolis for the past seventeen years
