A short typed and signed letter from Eleanor Roosevelt, First Lady and wife of American President, Franklin D. Roosevelt, to General J.C. Smuts on White House stationery dated March 13, 1943, which reads: "Dear General Smuts, My husband and I are delighted to have the card from you and Mrs. Smuts, which has just arrived. We send you and Mrs. Smuts our warmest greetings and look forward to meeting you here in this country. Very cordially yours, Eleanor Roosevelt". In the event, Smuts did meet Roosevelt later that year, not in the USA, but in Cairo, on his return flight from London where he had attended the meeting of the Commonwealth Prime Ministers. In the light of the strong wartime association between Smuts and Roosevelt, this is an item of great importance.
