First edition: xi, 408 pages, 40 pages publisher’s catalogue dated December 1897, frontispiece portrait, 8 full-page plates by C. Whymper, 24 photographic plates, folding map. Original dark blue cloth with gilt vignette of hunting scene on the upper cover and gilt titling on the spine, neatly recased, edges uncut, light foxing on the page edges, otherwise contents are bright, a good copy.

Czech (Kenneth) An annotated Bibliography of African Big Game hunting Books, 1785 to 1999, page 105: A well-written account of the author’s journey up the Zambesi into Barotseland and into the country of the Marotse. He ably describes the region, with attention paid to the area around Lake Victoria. Gibbons relates episodes of hunting buffalo, lion, roan, eland, hartebeest, and wildebeest in the region. His frontispiece portrait reveals Victorian mustachios to die for.
