The 1st edition of this attractive Art Nouveau work by Walter Crane. 1889. Cassell & Co. 4to. 40pp. each with full page illustrations in colour. 8pp. of advertisements at the rear. In the original binding of 1/4 blue cloth and illustrated boards and with illustrated endpapers. The edges of the boards and corners are rubbed with consequent slight loss of the edges of the fine illustrated paper overlay at the edges. Internally the pages are bright and unmarked and the first 16pp. have slight bumping of their top fore edge. The endpaper hinges are intact. About very good for a book nearly 140 years old.

Walter Crane was considered to be the most influential, and among the most prolific, children's book creators of his generation and along with Randolph Caldecott and Kate Greenaway, one of the strongest contributors to the child's nursery motif that the genre of English children's illustrated literature would exhibit in its developmental stages in the later 19th century.
