The author, the De Beers professor of Mining Engineering and Surveying in the University of the Witwatersrand and consultant to the Transvaal Chamber of Mines, was a member of the well-known Jeppe family of Johannesburg which gave its name to the Jeppe reef, Jeppe station, Jeppe suburb and three Jeppe schools
