Inscribed by the author on the front endpaper, "From the author, Captain Fernyhough, Apr. 18 1834." This copy contains numerous notes in pencil as well as several lines drawn along the margins with "omit" written over the marked sections indicating this was the working copy for a later edition.
An important work as it records where the British fleet landed troops when they captured the Cape of Good Hope in 1806.
'In this volume there is an account of the capture of the Cape of Good Hope in 1806, the writer, who was present at the landing of the troops, observing that, after some difficulty, they landed at Lospord's Bay, a fact confirmed by the author of the biography of General Baird. Theal, however, states that the troops went ashore on the Blauberg coast (somewhere in the vicinity), and Wilmot asserts that the locality was Sospiras Bay. Lospord's Bay (of which there is a view in the volume) is shown on Burchell's map, published in 1822, but not on Barrow's, published in 1795-6. There is also a description of the expedition against Buenos Ayres under Sir Home Popham.' - Mendelssohn Vol.I, page 543
